Originating in Chicago during the 80’s, the slam was envisioned to combine the art of performance poetry with the rigorous competition of sports. Each performer will go through a series of rounds, going head to head with another poet, in hopes of beating elimination and remaining as the slam’s lone champion. Balagtasan, a traditional Philippine art form, encompasses much of what the modern day slam achieves. Filipino poets would stand before an audience, which would demand ebate on topics ranging frompolitics to falling in love. Poets would debate the issue in poetic form. Today’s slam phenomenon is a natural progression for the poets of today. Sign up NOW for the 8th Annual Poetry Slam!
