(FilAm ARTS)

Mission Statement

The Association for the Advancement of Filipino American Arts and Culture, also known as FilAm ARTS is a multi-disciplinary community arts organization whose mission is to advance the understanding of the arts and diverse cultural heritage of Filipinos in the United States through presentation, education and arts services. FilAm ARTS provides arts as a service to the community through three major programs: Festival of Philippine Arts & Culture, Pilipino Artist Network, and Eskuwela Kultura.

Festival of Philippine Arts and Culture

The Festival of Philippine Arts and Culture is the anchor program of FilAm ARTS. It is an annual series of multi-disciplinary arts events that takes place in the County of Los Angeles  from poetry readings, concerts, to visual arts exhibits culminating in a two-day festival weekend.

Pilipino Artists Network

The Pilipino Artists Network (PAN) is California-statewide, capacity-building program for established and emerging Filipino American artists in nine different disciplines: Traditional Folk Arts, Dance, Theater, Music, Visual Arts, Media Arts, Literary Arts, Arts Education, and Presenters. It is designed to promote the growth of multiple disciplines by developing mutually supportive relationships that provide greater access to resources and markets not otherwise available through individual efforts.

Eskuwela Kultura

The Eskuela Kultura is an after school program that seeks to educate and empower Filipino and Latino youth of Historic Filipinotown through arts and mentorship with community leaders. It is a partner program of Search to Involve Pilipino Americans and FilAm ARTS sponsored by the Los Angeles City Community Development Department through the Neighborhood Action Program.

JILLY S. CANIZARES

EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Jilly is one of those folks (who were either creative or crazy!) who started FPAC 15 years ago, and is now FilAm ARTS’ first Executive Director. A firm believer in the power of arts, she is co-founder of the California Cultural Alliance, an alliance of statewide artist network advocating for multicultural arts. In another life, she is a classical flautist and an orchestral arranger. She is also parenting an artist by the name of La-Iya (old Tagalog meaning: Freedom).

ALISON DE LA CRUZ

FESTIVAL DIRECTOR

Alison has been active in the Los Angeles community for over 15 years as a facilitator, organizer and community-based artist. She has performed her solo theatrical work as part of the Mark Taper Forum’s Asian Theatre Workshop at the Kirk Douglas Theatre and Ivy Substation, as well as at the David Henry Hwang Theatre in Los Angeles, Bindlestiff Studio in San Francisco, the Northwest Asian American Theatre in Seattle,WA, and the Asian Arts Initiative in Philadelphia, PA.Alison is also the Writer, Narrator and Associate Producer of the feature length documentary,“Grassroots Rising: Asian Immigrant Workers in Los Angeles” produced by Visual Communications (2005). She was recently named one of Frontiers Magazine’s “Lesbians We Love.”

VANESSA VELA LOVELACE

ADMINISTRATIVE DIRECTOR

Vanessa Vela Lovelace is FilAm ARTS’ Administrative Director. She is a mother, writer, cultural worker, and advocate for community art for social change. Now in her 6th FPAC, she is an arts administrator veteran who has worked through several FPAC roles: from Literary Programs Curator to Generations Stage Manager to Head Curator. As the Administrative Director, she focuses on developing systems that are effective and efficient while strengthening the community through quality programs. She also manages the vendor participation, advertising and concessions at FPAC.

ARIS TAGLE

CHAIR

Aris has been a member of the FilAm ARTS Board of Directors since 2000, and assumed the role of Chair in 2005. He holds a BS in Mechanical Engineering from UCLA and an MBA from the Yale University School of Management. He has worked professionally in Internet marketing and business development for the past six years. Aris is also a former Chair of the Pilipino Alumni Association (PAA) of UCLA and co-founder of the annual UCLA PAA Fundraising Benefit. His many community involvements include the STAPLES Center Foundation, Riordan Fellows Alumni Association, and the Yale MBA Alumni Admissions Committee.

JAMES SANTA MARIA

VICE-CHAIR

James is the founder of his eponymously named consulting firm,The Santa Maria Group, and has repped a mix of individuals, private and public sector as well as non-profit organization clients. A UCLA alumnus with a decade of LA City Hall work under his belt, he is an advisor on land use and investment properties for residential housing, commercial and industrial developments. James advised the successful group effort behind CALFACE, a coalition of Filipino American cultural centers in the state.

LALEE VICEDO

TREASURER

An activist and community worker, Lalee Vicedo is the Development Director of Strategic Concepts in Organizing and Policy Education (SCOPE), a social justice organization based in South Los Angeles. She is also the Finance Director of Gabriela Network, a national women’s organization supporting issues of Filipino women and children. In the past, she’s held positions in organizations such as Search to Involve Pilipino Americans (SIPA), Asian Pacific AIDS Intervention Team,ACLU of Southern California and REACH LA.

NERISSA SILAO

SECRETARY

Nerissa is an independent public relations consultant, specializing in developing and implementing communications programs and planning events or launches. Prior to becoming an independent consultant, Silao was management supervisor at The Rogers Group (formerly Rogers & Associates) one of the West Coast’s largest public relations/strategic communications firms.

CARLA BYKOWSKI

Carla Bykowski has over eighteen years of experience in programs serving children, families, and schools in diverse communities of Los Angeles County through work with the LA County Office of Education, the LA City Commission for Children,Youth and their Families, the LA County’s First Five Commission, the Los Angeles Unified School District, the Museum of Tolerance and has recently returned to the LA Children’s Planning Council. She received a Masters degree in Social Work from the University of Southern California in 1997 and an undergraduate degree in Psychology from Loyola Marymount University in 1988. She has a strong passion for social justice, equity and multicultural education through the arts for children, families and communities.

MELANY DE LA CRUZ-VIESCA

Melany de la Cruz-Viesca is a community planner, organizer, and lover of spoken word. She is a believer in preserving and sharing art across all cultures, especially for future generations. She has helped organize the FPAC Poetry Slam for the past four years. Currently, she is the Assistant Director of the UCLA Asian American Studies Center and the Managing Editor of AAPI Nexus, a nationwide journal focusing on Asian American & Pacific Islander Policy, Practice, and Community issues. She holds a master’s in urban planning from UCLA and a bachelor’s in ethnic studies and urban studies and planning from the UC San Diego.

WINSTON F. EMANO

CHAIR EMERITUS

An FPAC perennial,Winston credits his longtime involvement with FilAm ARTS as the major reason why he is once again a practicing Filipino. A senior executive with TCDM and Associates, he has created and directed media strategies for numerous Oscar campaigns and hit films including “Mad Hot Ballroom,” “Super Size Me” and “Better Luck Tomorrow.” A William Pacey scholar,Winston triple-majored in print journalism and media law at the SI Newhouse School at Syracuse University and is the co-founder of the Asian Filmmakers Reception at the Sundance Film Festival and the Philippine Overseas Olympic Development Committee.

FLORANTE P. IBANEZ

Florante Peter Ibanez is a returning Board member who has just graduated from UCLA with two Masters degrees in Asian American Studies and Library Information Studies. He has worked at the Rains Library of Loyola Law School for the last 14 years and was promoted last year to be their Manager of Library Computer Services. He has been long time community activist and is married to another activist, Rose Estepa Ibanez.They have two beautiful daughters, Gabriela and Mikaela. Takeshi, their pekingese puppy, is the latest family addition.

TONY L. RINGOR

Executive Director of the Diversified Services for Youth and Seniors, Inc. Governing board member of the Wilmington Neighborhood Council and a member of the Port Community Advisory Committee, also member of FilAm ARTS Board of Directors for the past three years and Cultural Diversity Congressional Council under Congresswoman Juanita M. McDonald.

JUDGE CAS TOLENTINO

Casimiro U.Tolentino has been an Administrative Law Judge for the State of California since 1992. He has been a board member of various community groups, which he co-founded, including Visual Communications, FilAmArts, Philippine American Bar Association. He has been an Assistant Chief Counsel, Dept. of Fair Employment and Housing, Regional Attorney for the Public Employment Relations Board and Regional Director/Regional Attorney for the Agricultural Labor Relations Board. A former attorney for Writers Guild of America West, and Embassy Television, Cas served for nine years as a Commissioner/President of the LA City Civil Service Commission (1984-1993). He is currently on the board of the Asian Pacific American Legal Center. He has been a past Board member of United Way, Rebuild LA, State Bar Committee on Ethnic Relations, and the State Bar Executive Committee of the Labor and Employment Section. He is married to Jennifer Masculino Tolentino, an RN-Certified Nurse-midwife, and has two children Casimiro (CJ) and Cristina.

MELISSA VELUZ-ABRAHAM

A one time Bruin herself, Melissa Veluz-Abraham now enjoys working with students as an advisor at the UCLA Center for Student Programming. Melissa appreciates all types dance and movement. She has been a dancer/member of Kayamanan Ng Lahi Philippine Folk Arts, Inc in the past 11 years and has been an avid salsa dancer since 1997. She picked up practicing kung fu five years ago and is now a student of the Beijing Taichi and Kung Fu Academy. Melissa loves working with youth of all ages at the Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church in North Hills. She coordinates a program for high school students called College-4-Everyone and facilitates the Youth Leadership Team in the planning of the annual summer camp for community youth.

As a cultural ambassador of life, Marivell will be a 4th year at UCLA and is currently pursuing a B.A in World Arts and Cultures. She is interested in culture, all aspects of the arts, and community which made her time worth while at FilAm ARTS as an intern.

MARY DACUMA

PUBLIC RELATIONS INTERN

Mary is currently a junior @ USC studying communications and journalism. She enjoys food, sleep, sensations, books, and browsing sephora.com. She is very excited to be working for FilAm ARTS and assisting with FPAC. She hopes you will have as good a time at the festival as she will. P.S. Balut is delicious. Seriously.

SARAH (SERA) KOO

FILAM ARTS INTERN / ARTS ADVOCACY INTERN

Sera left for Boston 4 years ago and is now finally back. A recent graduate of Wellesley, Sera is taking the year off to work in the API community before pursuing further studies. LA, NY, Boston, or even Korea, Sera is still deciding where she wants to be in the near future. This past summer, Sera was an intern at FilAm ARTS from the Leadership in Action program through Leadership Education for Asian Pacifics, Inc. (LEAP) and this is her first FPAC.

Erika is an incoming Junior at USC and after two years of wasted intro classes, has decided to take up a Bachelor’s Degree in Communication. What’s after that, you ask? She’d like to know that answer herself. She is currently the President of USC’s Troy Philippines and can honestly say,“FilAm ARTS supports Foodies.”

NICOLE MONTOJO

FILAM ARTS INTERN / COMMUNITY LIAISON

Nicole is a Sociology major/Music minor at Scripps College. Originally from Walnut in the San Gabriel Valley, Nicole has spent the summer spreading the word about FPAC in her hometown and surrounding cities. She also worked to develop connections with members of the Filipino community in the San Gabriel Valley.

JENNIFER SANTOS

FILAM ARTS INTERN / PARTNER ARTIST COORDINATOR

Some people call her crazy and others constantly remind her to breathe. Jennifer Santos is a fourth year student at CSULB. She is majoring in Marketing/Public relations and hopes to be working in the Media industry. Currently, she is involved with PAC (Pilipino American Coalition) and Kappa Psi Epsilon. Her passion is to advocate to her peers about Filipino history and working with the community. Never underestimate the power of a short pinay!

JOHANNA SIOSON

FILAM ARTS INTERN / ORANGE COUNTY COMMUNITY LIAISON

Born and raised in Northern Orange Country, Johanna will be entering into her fourth and final year at the University of Notre Dame in Indiana. As a Business and Sociology major, Johanna has taken particular interest in the structure and mechanics of a non-profit organization, especially those such as FilAm Arts which cater specifically towards the fine arts. Although she cannot be here with us this weekend, she is most definitely here in spirit. She sends her best wishes to us here in sunny LA as she looks up from her text books to look outside at an impeding Indiana snow storm =).

Gerry Gregory Linsangan is owner/operator of Gerry Rigged Lights. He’s done lighting design work in theaters throughout the Western U.S. (David Henry Hwang Theater, Japan American Theater,The Madrid Theater,The Warner Grand Theater, Jackson Hall/Mondavi Theater) and designed for Playwrights’ Arena,TDRZ Productions,West Coast Ensemble, Pacific Resident Theater Ensemble, Here and Now, Michael Paulo, Lauren Tom,The Visiting Violettes, Lodestone Theater Ensemble, CAPE, On Ensemble,Taiko Project, East West Players and Dogeaters. Gerry Rigged Lights also provides lights for “no budget” Indie Films.

Since the last FPAC, Anneli is proud to say that she is enjoying her career in Sales and Marketing! She graduated from UCLA, bound to do community work in the Los Angeles area like most Bruin alums! A self-proclaimed FPAC-addict, she will miss the weekly Thursday meetings terribly —and look forward to coming back again next year!

Telly has been volunteering for FPAC since its inception in 1992. Always ready with a smile and a helpful hand throughout the 15 years, Telly has worked her magic on the Main Stage and the Generations Stage tirelessly and graciously. Telly teaches Special Education for Santa Monica High School.

NICK PEREZ

ASSISTANT STAGE MANAGER

Nick was born in Los Angeles and grew up in Duarte, CA (the San Gabriel Valley). He is the Emcee Coordinator and is helping organize the Artist-Kick off Party for this year’s FPAC. He pursued his undergraduate degree at UCLA where he studied English Literature and was heavily involved in the Filipino community. During his second year at UCLA, he served as the Co-Director of UCLA’s community servce program PREP (Pilipino Recruitment & Enrichment Program). Nick was also involved in Lapu the Coyote that Cares (the longest running Asian-American collegiate theater company) where he was the Improv director and wrote and performed in various comedic and dramatic sketches. Nick is now working as a publicist for the TV and cable industry and is pursuing his dream of doing PR for independent and foreign films so he can help promote the work of Filipino directors.

Born and partly raised in the Philippines, Glenda Gamboa is a UCLA graduate. A former bilingual elementary school teacher, she currently works for Friends of the Family, a Community Mental Health and Family Support non-profit. Ms. Gamboa is an active member of the Pilipino-American community in Los Angeles.

ERNIE PENA

WEB DESIGNER/PHOTOGRAPHER/DOCUMENTATION

A native of Pennsylvania, Ernie left the rolling hills of Amish country for LA 9 years ago to pursue a dotcom/entertainment industry career. When he’s not procrastinating from indie filmmaking, he’s photographing Filipino community events and working his day job at Conde Nast Publications.

JOEL QUIZON

VOLUNTEER COORDINATOR

Joel Quizon, received a Film Degree from CSUN and in subsequent years worked in independent films, the music industry at London-Sire Records and he is currently at E! Entertainment Television. Joel hosts an afternoon of music at Tribal Café called “diggin’ Sunday” every 3rd Sunday of the month, where he and resident selectors spin Jazz, Pinoy Rock, Soul and Asian Funk.

MARK VILLEGAS

HEADQUARTERS/INFO BOOTH COORDINATOR

Mark Villegas is a second-year MA student in the Asian American Studies Program at UCLA. He hails from Jacksonville, Florida. His research interests include Hip Hop Studies and Critical Filipino/a Studies.
