5th Annual Amateur DJ Battle

Hip hop is a culture bourne of youth, struggle and American History. Once touted as a phenomenon that would eventually pass, it has grown into a worldwide institution that is here to stay. Filipinos have come to figure prominently in hip hop culture and entertainment, and have pushed the boundaries of the art of turntablism.

Since the early 1980s, at the inception of what we now call hip hop, the DJ has been a major fixture in the artform and culture. Key ingredients in a DJ’s aresenal are the ability to rock a crowd, and keep the beat going with energy and style. In the 1990s, Filipino American DJ crews like the Invisbl Skratch Piklz, 5th Platoon, and the World Famous Beat Junkies, began innovating at the art of “turntablism,” (a term coined by Pinoy DJ Qbert) developing the turntable into a musical instrument and spreading this new music throughout the world.

OUR PURPOSE IN FOUNDING AND CONTINUING THE DJ BATTLE EACH YEAR:

• to contribute to the growth of this dynamic artform,
• to provide a space for up-and-coming youth to develop and showcase their skills,
• to present to the community the emergence of DJing as an artform and viable career choice, and the prominent role that young Filipinos take in this field.

Now in its fifth year, the FPAC Amateur DJ Battle is curated by Kat Carrido and friends, in partnership with Stacks Vinyl Record Store.
